Statement on the fires in Attica Region

Compatriots,

There are no words to describe our feelings during these times. The country lives an unspeakable tragedy. Dozens of human lives have been lost. And this is unbearable for everyone. Especially for the families who lost their loved ones.

But also for those of us who are in positions of responsibility. For those who understand that there is nothing more precious than the human life. Today Greece is mourning. And in the memory of those who were lost we declare three days of National Mourning. But we must not let the mourning overpower us.

As these hours are hours of battle, unity, courage and above all solidarity. Only if we are united, we can stand against the tragedy. Greece is experiencing a great test. During such times, there are no differences.

The time will come when we search, I hope with respect for the dead, for the reasons. It is now the time to take action and fight. Fight to save what can be saved. Fight to defeat the fire. Fight to find the missing.

Not mourn other lives. And soothe the pain of those who have been afflicted.

With utmost respect and true recognition:

For our firefighters, they give an incredible heroic fight.

The rescuers of the National Emergency Center (EKAV)

The men and women of the Armed Forces, the Coast Guard and the police that yesterday saved hundreds of human lives.

With immense respect for the thousands of volunteers who are presently present at the front of life.

I want to commit myself, that:

Nothing and no one will be forgotten.

We will leave nothing and no one without the assistance of the state.

And nothing will be left without answers.

Finally, I want to warmly thank all the foreign leaders who have been expressing their solidarity and offering their assistance.

Greece is going through one of the toughest moments.

We thank them for their thoughts.

With unity and faith in our forces, we will stand on our feet.

Thank you.
