Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a meeting this morning in Zagreb with his Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenkovic.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Prime Minister congratulated Mr Plenkovic on the successful organization of the European People’s Party (EPP) Conference.
Mr Mitsotakis welcomed the election of Donald Tusk to the EPP leadership and said he was optimistic about the prospects of implementing the ambitious agenda of the new Commission that will soon begin its work, noting that this agenda is particularly important for both Greece and Croatia.
“My top priority is for Greece to be on the path of sustainable development,” the Prime Minister said, adding: “The situation in Greece has improved greatly over the last few months with the steps our government has taken. I further believe that we are sending a message to Europe as a whole that populism can be defeated, not by copying populist tactics, but by focusing on meaningful and realistic policies.”
During the meeting they discussed, amongst other things, the European prospects of the Western Balkans and the initiatives that Greece and Croatia can take (in view of the Croatian EU Presidency), the multiannual European financial framework, the effects of Brexit and the further development of Greek – Croatian relations.
