The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred to the new relationship between Greece and the United States of America during the dinner being held in his honour by Greek American organisations.
At his initial address, Mr. Mitsotakis pointed out that both during the previous day’s meeting with the US President, Donald Trump, and during his visit in the US Congress “there was a mutual acknowledgment of the importance of the strategic cooperation between Greece and the United States”.
“I have been following the developments in Washington for decades and this is the first time that I notice such a positive attitude towards Greece. This is a really important opportunity that we need to take advantage of”, said the Prime Minister.
“Greece is back”, mentioned Mr. Mitsotakis “as a serious and responsible regional power”, and added that it has already been six months since he became Prime Minister and that Greek citizens gave him the mandate to lead the country to prosperity and stability.
He emphasised that for the last 40 years the Greek state kept on forgetting all those who have not forgotten the country; however, the top priority of this government was to ensure that Greeks living abroad can have the right to vote from their country of residence. And this is now an official law of the state. “After 40 years of endless discussions, this government ensured that Greeks living abroad can vote from their country of residence. We had to compromise to achieve an increased majority, but this was an important first step to further strengthen the ties between the Greek Diaspora and the mother country”, said the Prime Minister addressing Greeks who live and thrive in the US and who have always been pioneers in their new home country.
“This government supports the investments of American businesses in Greece” pointed out Mr. Mitsotakis and asked the Greek American entrepreneurs in the room to ask how the new government welcomed those who wanted to invest in Greece these last six months.
Also, the Prime Minister referred to the important work of Archbishop Elpidoforos, who had previously warmly welcomed Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
It should be noted that there are dozens of federations and many Greek American organisations in the USA aiming to preserve the Greek identity, promote Greek culture and Greek education, but also disseminate Greek values within the American society, while there are also important organisations with an aim to highlight national issues, enhance the relations between Greece and the USA, promote Greek interests, but also education and research.
Addressing the entire Greek Diaspora, the Prime Minister highlighted the following: “Greece needs you now more than ever. But this time it is within the framework of a positive beginning and not only for defending our country when its interests are jeopardised.” And within this framework he invited them “to write altogether this new page in Greek history”.
