During a telephone conversation with Chancellor Angela Merkel, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his displeasure with the fact that Greece has not been invited to the Berlin Conference on Libya and his concern over the situation in Libya, especially after the “null memoranda” that have been signed between the Sarraj government in Tripoli and Turkey.
Mr. Mitsotakis also expressed concern regarding the security of the Eastern Mediterranean region as a result of Turkey’s destabilizing actions, calling upon Merkel and the other representatives of the European Union at the conference to implement the European Council’s recent decision on this issue, which is binding.
Chancellor Merkel expressed her full commitment to the EU positions, noting however that the goal of the Berlin Conference is to bring peace and stability to Libya and that it will not address issues of maritime zones in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Merkel also expressed her full support for the conclusions of the recent European Council regarding the memorandum signed by Libya and Turkey on maritime zones.
