Today is a beautiful, a great day for the Greek Republic, for the Parliament, for our Democracy. The National Assembly has elected, by a very wide majority, the first female President of the Hellenic Republic, Ms. Aikaterini Sakellaropoulou. An important legal figure, a great judge, a personality that unites all Greeks.
Since the beginning of this procedure, I have stated that I will strive to nominate a person who will symbolize the unity of the Greek nation. I am very happy that the result of today’s vote has confirmed our ability to form a consensus when important issues are at hand.
Greece is entering a new era, with Ms. Sakellaropoulou as the first female President of the Republic. We have opened today a window to the future, and as our country enters the third decade of the 21st century with growing confidence, our President of the Republic represents this transition to a new era.
To Ms. Sakellaropoulou I wish every success in her new role. Guided by our Constitution, I am confident that we will have a productive cooperation for the benefit of our country.
