Message from Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the Greek diaspora living in the United States of America, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

My dear compatriots in the United States,
Greece is already going through the second month of the emergency measures imposed on us because of the pandemic. Along with the illegal invasion of migrants at our borders, we were also attacked by this invisible enemy against our health. We have won the first battle. The second one is being won every day; with bold Government decisions; with the mobilisation of the State; and with the responsible attitude of all citizens in cities and villages.
In these difficult times, my thoughts are with you, our brothers beyond the borders. To Greeks wherever they may be —and especially those in the United States and New York, which are counting numerous cases and, unfortunately, numerous losses from Covid-19. The Motherland stands by their side!
Our country’s experience shows that staying calm and showing solidarity yields results. So stay home, take care of your personal hygiene and look after the most vulnerable. And stand by one another’s side. Our Embassy and Consulates will always be open to you. And the expatriate organisations, along with our Church, are a stable network, where you can offer and help each other.
Finally, you can travel mentally, and take courage from home, reducing the distance between us: communicate with relatives. Watch Greek programmes on television and online. Get to know our new platform, www.greecefromhome.com. Try taking Greek lessons. And with the memories from your trips here, add colour to the grey that besieges us temporarily.
My compatriots,
Your grandparents and parents once started off a small country with limited means, but with infinite power and ingenuity. They laid down roots and succeeded in their new homelands, overcoming all difficulties. We can do this now, too. With responsibility and discipline, this ordeal the pandemic poses will soon be over. And that moment must find us healthy and with as few losses as possible. For us to meet again, united and strong, in the summer, at home.
Greece always needs the support of its children. And they always need its bright sun and blue seas, wherever they may live.
I wish you all health and courage.
And may we meet again on happy occasions!
