Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Attikon Hospital today in order to get vaccinated against Covid-19.
The Prime Minister was welcomed there by Sotiris Tsiodras, Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and Marios Themistokleous, General Secretary of Primary Health Care.
Following the vaccination procedure, Kyriakos Mitsotakis talked with doctors and members of the nursing staff, whom he thanked for their contribution to the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, whilst also exchanging wishes.
The Prime Minister stated:
Today is a great day for science. It is a great day for the European Union, which managed to deliver the vaccine to all European countries on the same day, thus fulfilling the message of European solidarity.
I believe that on this day all Greek citizens, women and men, are smiling behind their masks, as the difficult enterprise of vaccinating the Greek population en masse against Covid-19 begins.
We, the heads of state and government (the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister), were the first to receive the jab, sending out the message that the vaccine is both safe and effective. The first healthcare workers will also get vaccinated today, along with us. Those who served on the front line in the battle against Covid and to whom we owe so much. Above all else, they should be the first to get vaccinated, not only in order to set the example, but also so that they can be safe as they fulfil their important duties.
Our goal is to vaccinate the vast majority of Greeks within the next months. I believe that as the vaccination process moves forward, and we will have the chance to realise that this vaccine is absolutely safe and effective, even our fellow citizens who are currently suspicious of the prospect of getting vaccinated will become convinced that this is the right thing to do.
The vaccine offers the only way to definitively put an end to this adventure caused by Covid, the only way for us to regain control of our lives. This is the only way forward so that we can embrace the people we love and economic activity can resume.
I believe that all these will come true within the first six months of 2021, so that during this emblematic year that is about to begin for our country -marking 200 years since the beginning of the Hellenic Revolution- we can write new pages of optimism in the history of our country.
Happy holidays and a happy new year to you all.
