Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ and European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager’s remarks at the start of their meeting

Thank you so much for visiting. It is a pleasure to see you again and I would also like to publicly thank you for all the support you have provided us with our Covid relief measures and the speed with which our programs were approved by you.

It was particularly important to make sure that we support the real economy, during this unprecedented crisis.

But I am happy to report that I think we have seen the worst of it and that the economy is poised for a very rapid recovery. I am very optimistic about the prospects of the Greek economy, also because we never stopped doing reforms during Covid. I think we are well-positioned now to take advantage of the post-Covid recovery and of course the RRF is going to be extremely significant. And as you know we were the second to submit our plan to the Commission.

I think it is a well thought-out plan, in-line with the Commission’s priorities but also with our own priorities; and hopefully we can have it approved within June so that we can get down to work.

So, again, thank you very much for being here and for supporting our efforts.

Commissioner Vestager: Thank you very much. It is really kind of you to say this. This is actually my first mission, first real mission after the pandemic started and this is an obvious place to go. Both of course for the Delphi Economic Forum but also because so much progress has been made.

Both the management of the pandemic, but also the situation of the country right now are really impressive. Really impressive.

We see in almost every area how reforms are progressing but also the expected growth.

You know, from the Commission side we see that Greece may be having the strongest growth of the euro countries next year.

The strength of the Recovery and Resilience Plan. Of course we hope that the last countries will now ratify the “own resource decision,” as you have done, of course a long time ago, so that we can aslo finance these important Plans. Because it is indeed really promising what we have ahead of us.
